I cant remember how old I was, grade school time frame. My grandfather was on the Army shooting team and I spent the day with him. I had never shot a rifle before..never. so he laid the good ole M14 on  a seat and would act like he'd feed a round in chamber until he finally did. BOOM! I was in LOVE. At age 18, joined the Corps, shooting plenty M16/M4s but never touched another M14/M1A until OIF. Finally bought M1A a few months ago...finally! only took 15 years. I knew perfectly well the capabilities of this baby. My wife was mad the 1st few week because I'd spend more time doing research and messing with my new rifle :D . But now my Soldier understands.

It took me 17 years from the time I first held one as a teenager and decided it was my rifle.  I wish I would've skipped buying all the other stuff, I could nhave got one in a few years probably.  They just seemed prohibitively expensive.

Back in 1966 I qualified with an M14 at Lackland AFB, Tx.  I didn't touch a Matel toy gun till I got to Bien Hoa, RVN in 1968.  The M16 was like a dirty word in Nam.  Had a very bad rep.  I was very impressed with the M14 and always wanted one, but was busy raising a family.  I finally got my hands on a NIB a couple of years ago:

Let's be honest, you are only going to squeeze so much accuracy out a AR. Sure you could have one customized for better accuracy, but so you can with a M1A. Plus a .308 not only has better ballistics and is more accurate than is a .223, but it carries much more energy. For them to tell you their AR's will outshoot you and your M21, is just stupid. If that were the case, the military would be using M16's for sniper rifles instead of M14's.

Well it took a hell of a lot more money to get it out of the M21 vs a stock 6724 Colt. Still the Colt might edge the M21 in total accuracy. Difference being minimal and I don't still have the 6724. In the distance race the M21 is way better.

I'll tell you my story. WHen I was a young private about 1000 years ago our unit was treated to a live fire exercise with weapons other than our M16. We had a limited opportunity to fire an M14, a G3, couple of FNs and Isaeli Uzi. I remember hitting man-sized targets out to 800 yards with the M14 with just iron sights. I've wanted one ever since. Finally 28 years later I've brought one home.

Only thing better than a M14 is two or more if them.

When ever my friends ask me why don't I get an AR or they give me shit for how expensive 7.62's are compared to 5.56.  I say to them "You wanna know why I have my M1A and not an AR?"
they say "Why?"
Then I say "Because bad guys like to hide behind shit when you start shooting at em!" lol

Now I feel like I've made the best decision of my life to own one.  Because when the gov't shows up on my door step wanting my firearms, I know I can shoot straight thru the door, lol.

I would however like a AR chambered in .50 Beuwolf or .300 Blackout.

But I still wouldn't choose any AR over my M1A.
