Random update on my boomstick, couple questions also

So, GG&G's shipment from Eotech is late, thus my early february ordered xps2-0 is still not here yet. I'm assuming SMG is having the same problem with my G33 magnifier, since it's from the same manufacturer. Apparently everyone's waiting on Sadlak to get their next shipment of TiN pistons sent out, so I no longer feel alone, I just hate that it's going to be the last piece I get.

On the positive side, I got an early tac-light for my Bday, it's a 200 lumen max, and I think like 50 lumen low setting light. I have it mounted in my foregrip, I just squeeze a trigger built into the foregrip and I have light.

I was looking at getting the Plano case that the NRA carries, my stepfather got one for his Sig Ar-15 and it's a really sweet case IMO. I checked my rifle against it, and it is literally like 1/8-3/8th's of an inch too long to fit. With the stock folded, it's actually taller than the case is when it's shut. So it looks like I'll be trying to get the larger one for my Bday, but the only thing that sucks is that it's a lot larger than I honestly need, and is going to therefore be a lot heavier and harder to wield. They also don't sell the larger case with the pluck foam, which I was really hoping to get.

Right now, I've got the bipod mounted as close to the mag well as I can without blocking it from being able to take magazines while folded. The rifle is extremely balanced in this set-up, and requires almost no muscle effort to maintain a positive shoulder weld, or keep both hands firmly on their respective grips. I'm hoping that, with the Troy stock's design, added weight, and the USCG muzzle brake, there will be little to no barrel climb, so that I won't have to worry about the bipod not being toward the front. When I sit with the rifle in my shoulder, the only real muscle im using is in my neck to keep my sight picture. I've never had a more natural and relaxed feeling in a bench shooting stance.

I'm curious on two things. Will it be ok to fire the rifle with the bipod mounted by the mag well? The other question I'm curious on is firing this big bastid without using the shoulder as a point of contact: IE firing it with the stock folded and having the pistol and foregrips as my only points of contact. I'm assuming with the weight and brake that it wont break my wrists or slam me in the face? I've never fired anything over a .223 without a positive shoulder weld, but I am 6'5" 290 lbs.

I just hate this waiting. Thanks to the ammo situation, I probably won't take the rifle to the range until I get every last part in, so July looks like the answer. Hopefully I can pick up a summer job and grab that FNX-45 and some ammo (.45 ACP isn't as hard to get atm as 7.62 NATO), and take it to the range at the same time.

Federal/Lake city grain differences for same round type

What's the difference? I have 149 gr federal lake city stuff in my closet, and I'm buying 147 gr lake city federal stuff from a guy off of armslist, I'm just curious why the bullet grains are posted as different. Wouldn't the same m80 FMJ ammo be the same from the same manufacturer? This is confusing me like the 142 vs 146 gr M62 federal lake city tracer ammo I've been seeing. Also seen 173 gr lake city 118LR instead of the 175 gr... I guess there is similar for the 168gr stuff too

So, I see that CTD is having a tough time selling their lake city M62 tracer rounds, even at 64 cents a round. I remember a week ago they were 80 cents a round.

I'm wondering if the fact that they list it as 142 grains has anything to do with it? Everywhere on the internet that I'm reading lists the m62 as a 146 grain round from lake city. Even then, I figured people would be jumping all over it. Is there some inherent disadvantage to using tracer rounds?

Curious

So I'm way behind the times, and apparently there's this thing called slide fire, that effectively turns semi-auto AKs and ARs into fully auto, legally.

I've seen that you can put this system on Saiga 12's, and from what I've seen it's purely based off of your buffer tube, at least the AR one is. So would a Troy mcs with a collapsing buffertube be capable of using one of these, or any system that utilizes AR buffer tubes (Vltor is the only other one I can thing of off the top of my head)?

I'm assuming this stuff operates by not having a pistol grip attached to the chassis, but instead it free floats inside the buttstock.

Tried finding something on youtube regarding an M1A with slide fire, but it's just a bunch of silly bumpfiring.

Scout vs. Standard

New to the forum - have gone through every topic on here and finally decided to post as could not find a similar topic. I'm finally going to get an M1A and am trying to decide between a standard and a scout, leaning towards the scout. I've been blessed in that I already have a couple of Garands, AR's, and M1 carbines. May use it in CMP matches, when not using a Garand or my Rock River National Match( believe me, I am probably a worse than average shooter, but still love it !!). Have read a lot of comments and feedback through all the topics from those with experience with both it seems, and would really appreciate your thoughts before making the purchase. Thanks much and Happy Holidays !!

Planning my build

So I should be getting my money tomorrow, and I'm looking at what I'm wanting to do at the moment to "finish" my rifle.

I've already got the chassis, so now I'm looking at the following:

GG&G Eotech 512 with lens covers
7X flip up magnifier
SEI good iron muzzle break
Sadlak Spring guide, recoil buffer and titanium piston
tango down foregrip
mako pistol grip
folding stock mechanism
vltor RE2 bufferless buffer tube, castle nut and end plate (might need 2 of the last for the FSM, dont know yet)
vtlor emod buttstock
BUIS
Vltor Modpod
laser
Sadlak Mag release latch

Anything ya'll don't see that you would do?

What do ya'll think of Vltor's Modpod?

Anyone mind commenting on the angle of pull for the trigger after a pistol grip? Are those expensive trigger sleeves worth grabbing?

Mag craze!!

I don't know if any of you guys have tried to get any 20 round M14 mags or even 30 round AR mags, but WOW!!!
They are extremely difficult to get and if you do find somebody who has them in stock, but prepare to open up your wallet wide.
I did much searching and stocked up on reasonably priced mags and even bought some extras. I figured the extras would be a good financial investment if nothing else.
In case you guys are looking, this is what I've found that may help you.
44mag.com has Theromold polymer M14 mags. I've not tried them, but everyone I've talked to that has, swears by them.
dillionprecision.com has ProMag M14 mags. I have tried these and they work great. Unlike earlier ProMag M14 mags that were blued, the ones now are parkerized.
ustacticalsupply.com has CMI M14 mags, for now. They are a little more than what I've paid in the past from 44mag, but not much more and they are the only place I found that has them in stock.
dpms.com has AR mags that have aluminum bodies.
bushmaster.com has AR mags.
I've not found Magpul Pmags anywhere, without paying through the nose for them. I did find some locally from a friend that has a shop.
I did backorder some Pmags and was assured my order will be filled next month, we shall see.
If you guys are even thinking about mags, I'd strongly suggest you buy them now before Obama puts an end to it all.
My buddy with the shop told me to buy all I could lay my hands on. He said his resources have almost dried up. He said the same thing about AR's as well. Best of luck!!

Recoil Buffer?

Desert Warrior Products has a "recoil buffer" for the M1A/M14 that appears to mount on the operating spring rod guide and is supposed to eliminate the steel on steel inpact during recoil when firing.

To take a look at it and read the desciption, go to:http://www.desertwarriorproducts.com/M1A-M14-Accurizing.html.
Does anyone here have any experience with these?? The theory sounds good but thought I would get some thoughts from the experts here before sending in my cash.

Why we own our M1A's..........

Just curious as to why people chose their M1A's, I'll start.......
When i was 12 i was already a miltary history buff, being the son of a soon to retire Vietnam era NCO i guess it was given i would be military obsessed. That year Ken hackathorn wrote and article on a specialized M-14 him and Another man built specifically for military consideration for Rapid Deployment forces to the middle east, it was M1A in a M14E1 stock painted Chocolate chips desert camo, they put a flashhider from an HK and the front sight from an HK on it. I read the article and was instantly in love with everything M-14.
This coupled with my dads hatred for the Mouse gun and his undying love for weapons of Iron and wood convinced me i would one day own one.
Then the movie "Full Metal Jacket", that movie was like a M-14 porno for me, i salivated every time i watched it! Then Desert Storm, where i watched it come out of retirement for EOD disposal and to make up for Sniping rifle shortages as the M-21.
So i graduated high school then came college in the late 1980's, I tried to follow the family example and join the army, but was denied for my Asthma(Which is triggered by dust! Got screwed by that one in life) anyway, once in college i had other economic worries, like being able to pay tuition! Then college ended and i was free, except for the debt of college!! Five years later i payed all tha off and used the newly found extra income to finally purchase my M1A in 2000! I bought this rifle not only for enjoyment but also an "What if?" rifle
, as part of emergency preparedness supplies, Not that i am expectign anything to happen or ever want it to, but if it does............

I have been a happy camper ever since, especially seeing the M-14 again being brought out of retirement for this round of middle east pest control.......

Alright guys post your M1A stories!! Lets hear them, i know you guys didn't just get an itch one day and bam there was an M1A!

I'm buying up original 60s USGI mags now. I'm not getting them necessarily for use, but more as collectors items. That is when I find them at good prices. Seems all this mag craze has not effected the 60s USGI mags in prices too much. They are still selling about what they were before all this panic started. I guess guys don't realize that they are damn good mags, even though they were manufactured many years ago.

Optics for M1A Scout?

Merry Christmas from Pennsylvania everyone! I hope everyone got all the bullets and magazines they could ever want for Christmas as I see I'm not the only one concerned about getting magazines and ammo in the future. I believe they will be available but expensive. I hope I'm wrong.

Anyway, my question regards optics.I have a Scout and have been shopping for red dot's for quite awhile and at this point am leaning towards one of the Aimpoints. However, I have decided to get a Beretta CX 4 carbine
to compliment my M9A1 pistol and that is going to be adequate for any situation out to 75 to 100 yards. Making that purchase will make my M1A the "go to" rifle for longer distances.

So, has anyone ever mounted a standard rifle scope on the forward rail of the scout? The main issue I see would be being able to get my eye close enough to get a full view through the scope.

I can get the Sadlak mount but if I can save the $250.00 or so and mount directly to the existing rail, I would prefer that route.

Suggestions always welcome. May everyone have a great 2013!

Standard M1a (Black Composite stock) $1195.00 (I found this a really good deal, a tip from the forums here) Ordered online through SportsmansOutdoorSuperStore.com. Excellent experience

SA Aluminum scope mount gen 4 $119.00 (I know... but I'm actually quite happy with it after adjustments)
leopold rings (SA rings) 1" - $7.00 (wrong size, cause i changed scopes due to Nikon back order)
Leather sling from SA $49.00
Softsided Tactical rifle case $79.00
Sadlak NM spring guide $40.00
Recoil buffer $15.00
Gas piston cleaning kit $29.00
Gas tube shim rings: $10.00
Fulton Armory Kydex adjustable cheek rest $49.00
from fulton armory, outstanding experience, delivered by Christmas eve.

lace up cheek rest: it does the job, but it gets loose, its annoying, it's replaced. 15.00

Total spent to date on M1A: 2312.00 +shipping expenses, roughly 100 bucks: 2412.00 total spent.

Really, for the amount spent I have a wonderful rifle that is accurate, accessorized how I want it and a joy to own...
Now, since I started playing with this, Ive discovered I have a talent for working with rifles, and I enjoy tweaking them quite a bit, I'm currently working on refinishing a marlin 336, refinishing the stock and did an action job on it. So, I scored a new hobby as well.. I think it was a good investment.

Some questions about random stuff

So I've got my troy mcs on order, now it's time to look at the rest of the stuff.

First question I've got is Mako Group, are they a crap low quality company? Or is their stuff decent? I'm leaning towards their pistol grip, and am half considering their buttstock that has a rising cheek support and a storage compartment in it (the other stock im considering is the Vltor Emod).

Second question is about bipods. I'm hoping to get something that can handle a 250 lb 6'5 guy leaning on it and not collapse or break, and I want it to swing forward and lock. I remember seeing some discreet ones that individually lock to the opposite sides of a rifle if you have rails, which the troy mcs does, but I dont know if they can tolerate a bigger guy, or if they traverse well. I don't really want to drop 250-400 bucks on a bipod, but if that's the only way to get a useful and reliable one then I guess I have no choice.

Back to Mako, they also have the flip up magnifiers that work with the Eotech, and they aren't as expensive as the eotech or aimpoint stuff, there's a video on youtube of a guy with a mako mag, and it seems to be nice, but I'd like some first hand opinions from people here.

Thanks for any comments, and have a merry christmas!

New guy here, just joined last week or so. I finally had the time to squeeze the trigger on my new M1A. I left my binoculars at home, and didn't want to drive all the way back. If I read the sighting manual like I should have I would have started with at least two clicks of elevation, but, I had it set on zero so at 100 yards I had a nice tight pattern but all about 4 inches low. Anyway, I had a friggin ball finally getting to shoot it. So, maybe this weekend I'll do it right and go really zero it in!!

M1A range trip

I made it to the range today to re-verify my newest standards zero.

I started at 50 yards just to see where she was and she was just a tad low.

At the hundred she was bout right on.

Heres a picture of my last ten round group. LOL nothing to write home about for sure, but it'd get the job done.

I had my bench set up to use my EBR as a spotting scope after my strings.

This is what the clouds looked like as I came back from moving my stand to the hundred. I was hopen it wouldnt rain the two hours I was there

When I finally moved the EBR I only got to really work the action into the chassis. After I switched from the 10 round mag to a "UHC" marked 20 rounder, after 5 or so rounds the rifle started ejecting as it should but the bolt went home on an empty chamber. After about three instances of this, I closed up shop for the afternoon so I can get this little issue cleared up.
I did get the action about seated in the chassis.
The five holes at about 5:30 low were the first string, and the rest are from the following strings to see how the shots moved as the action settled.

It has been so long I don't remember if I ordered it in March or April. I ordered a Scout Squad, Mossy Oak stock. My FFL ordered from 3 sources hoping to get lucky with one. I still don't have the rifle. I sold my AR10 to my younger brother to finance the M1A. I am getting anxious that it may never come. I thought maybe I should have kept the Armalite. Won't matter now because they are out of stock too. I guess I will hang on. I hope I have it by January.

I've done a fair amount of reading of various aftermarket parts that can be installed in improve the M1A. Particualrly shims for the gas system, spring guide, spring, gas piston, and gas plug.

I saw the video in which one fellow cuts the shim to install it since his muzzle device is welded to the barrel. I read some comments where others suggest not cutting it if possible and removing whatever is on the muzzle and the front sight to install the shim. However, doesn't removing and re-installing the front sight introduce the possibility of misaligning the sights? At the very least, you'd have to re-zero right?

I've also seen a recoil buffer on Midway's sight. Very mixed reviews on the site, does anyone here have any personal experience with it?

Problems with LRB receivers?

I bought a LRB M25 receiver about a year and a half ago. I finally have gotten to a time where I can build the rifle I want. A friend of mine sent me a copy of a forum where people have said the LRB have many problems and are out of spec. Including op rod fitting problems and over heat treatment. I really hope this is not true. Does any one know what the truth is. One person claimed to have been kicked off a forum site for publishing this info. I don't want to make a mistake that will cost me thousands. The warrenty has expired on my lrb m25 since I bought it over a year ago, even though it has been sitting in it's origional box since piurchase. They suggest a Smith Enterprises or 7.62 firearms receiver as being better.

Thanks for any help you can give me,

Cleaning and Maintenance Question

Greetings everyone! I recently purchased a M1A Loaded after years of wanting to own one. I have read through many articles/forum posts and watched several videos on disassembly, cleaning, and maintenance. However, I still have some questions and I wanted to ask for this forum's expertise.

1) Does anyone use grease on the part of the operating rod that goes through the ring underneath the barrel? Or just gun oil?

2) I have read that the gas system should be kept dry to operate properly. Does anyone use any solvents to help clean off the fouling that will dry without leaving behind a coating or residue? I use the Sadlak drills but it can take a while and it is easy to miss a spot.

Thanks for the help everyone!

Range Update 3

Been a stranger for too long, good to be back. Was fighting a nasty flare up of lower back problems, working too much and getting my youngest ready for 1st year of college.
Last post I had only shot 150Gr with my M1a Standard and was looking forward to getting some good 168Gr and seeing if I could improve my groups. Finally budgeted for some Federal Gold Medal Nat Match and it was everything I thought it would be. Much better grouping - fist size group of 20 rounds at 100 yards iron sights which I'm sure would be even better but for my need to continue to improve my shooting technique.
At 200 yards I was able to keep 10 rounds all on paper with the medium size target (about 16" x 20"). It's frustrating that my eyesight is having an affect when I shoot at that range. I'll keep working on technique and that should help. I know a scope would help but I just don't want to put a scope on my M1a. I really want to learn to shoot well iron sights even at long range.
A buddy of mine had a get together at his dad's farm and I shot some reloaded Ultramax 168Gr that I got at Cabela's for $84.00 for 100 rounds. I was also pleased with that ammo. Granted we only had 50 yards range, so I need to shoot some more of that ammo at my local range at 100 and 200 yards to really see how it stands up to Federal Gold Medal. Man I really like Federal ammo...I shot some 150Gr plain box Federal that shot noticeably better than any other 150 or 147Gr I tried.
One other thing - on an earlier post I had mentioned a problem with the rear sight elevation slipping one notch after a few shots. I found what was wrong - it was my fault. I had adjusted the sights to get my 100yd zero following most but not all of the instructions. I missed a step at the end. After you loosen, set and then tighten your rear sight you also need to roll it all the way up to full extended position, then tighten again, then roll back down to the spot you have set as zero. I did that last step and have had no more slippage.
Again it's great to be back with you all - looking forward to more M1a talk. What a fine rifle. I was really proud to bring her out at the farm and share.

what is best trigger for my m1a

I am building a m1a from the ground up. I have a lbr m25 rear lug receiver but no other parts yet. I want the best ( reliability, and action) trigger for this rifle. I have a stock m1a and the trigger is what I expect from a battle rifle. With the new one I want to shoot target and some hunting.
Newbie starting a SOCOM II EBR build

It's been a few weeks since I got my SOCOM II. I've known that I wanted to upgrade the stock before I even got it but I couldn't decide which stock to upgrade to. I know this might sound cheesy but after watching the movie Fast Five I've made up my mind to upgrade to an EBR stock.

Here's a picture of the M14 from Fast Five:
http://www.imfdb.org/w/images/8/8e/Fastfive-pstill-m14.jpg

Thats basically exactly where I want to go with my SOCOM II except I'm keeping my Magpul AFG and maybe going with a different sight.

Here's mine as it is:
http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/6955/imagebbj.jpg

I was hoping to get some of your inputs as to my choice and any recommendations you might have. What will I need to order besides the stock? Are there any other upgrades that I should do before the stock?

If everything seems good to go within the next few days, I'll order the stock and get started.

Thank you!

Scout Impressions

Well I didn't get to shoot it. My "friend" was being an ass and wouldn't let me, But I got to take it apart for him and lub it. Burned up a mag of my ammo also. I cannot say things like "someone just shoot me" because they will, with friends like that.

Anyway looking it over I thought the op rod was rather something. It barely clears the track hitting the windage knob. Doesn't seem that close on mine with a USGI op-rod. No time to inspect it really close.

Also there is rubbing. The op rod hits the scout rail mount. It also drags on the barrel. Plus it is dragging on the stock. Fit...there is none. Speaking of stocks, what a POS they are. Front band is normally loose, so the gas cylinder key isn't timed. The safety bridge on the receiver looked to be working about right, so that is good. The rest of the receiver, who knows. It might be okay, but without careful measuring I wouldn't know. Trigger wasn't half bad. Better than I remember them being. I guess one can get lucky from time to time.

Accuracy, well that seemed okay. Isn't a M21, but by good it wasn't bad. Another thing I did for him. Spot and adjust his sights.

All and all, I'm not buying a scout from SAI. I'll build one from scratch. Too many things just not right. Make it better to begin with instead of chasing all the inconsistencies.

Best thing for a scout owner to do, ditch the scout rail, ditch the cheap stock if it is the fiberglass one and drop it in something better. Also ditch that thingy on the end. What an ugly ass thing that brake is. Time the gas cylinder. USGI or equivalent commercial parts as needed. And add the commonly needed drop in parts.

SOCOM 16 front sling hoop options....

I have installed a Viking 2 point tactical sling on my SOCOM 16.... but it needs a side mount option for the front of the rifle. I noticed that Midwest Industries makes a light mount listed at the following link: http://www.midwestindustriesinc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=168

Sadlak TiN coated gas piston review

I recently replaced my gas piston with the TiN coated piston from Sadlak, after some excellent advice from M21guy. (thanks Chris!!!)
I have to say, I am more than pleased with the results. It did in fact improve the accuracy of my rifle. I will admit that part of it was luck probably in recieveing a piston that my rifle liked. But I believe it was also due to the fact that Sadlak has a really good design and that they also do excellent workmanship. I can not attest to the pistons made by SEI, but I think they would be hard pressed to offer a better piston than the Sadlak. I would buy another Sadlak TiN piston in a heartbeat. I highly recommend it.

SAI M1A True Caliber: 7.62 or .308?

What is the true/actual caliber of the Springfield Armory M1A Standard?
However, I believe SAI stopped stamping "7.62MM" on the receiver heels. Nearly 50% of all other internet references to the M1A (not M14) is .308. I've tried researching my answer on this forum and have not found a conclusive answer.

M1A Socom II

First a little on my backround. I was born and raised in Florida and was lucky enough to have had a Grandfater that served his country in Vietnam. He loved his M1A so much that it was the gun he taught me to shoot on. After many years I was finally old enough to buy a rifle and wished that I could afford the price tag on one. long story shory I did noot come home with one and I ended up settling for some othe rifle that I did not want but could afford now fast forward 15 years I have been in the Navy for 12 years and I just got tired of buying what I could afford and not what I want. So now I have saved up the money for a Socom II it is my dream gun..... I had to special order it here in Nevada and it was back ordered and I will finally get it on September 1st.... So my dream is almost complete, I haave about a grand left to spend on her and I would like to put some nice glass on her nothing to dramatic but 200-300 yards out would be great any ideas???? I have another issue I would also still like to use the iron sites as well is there any way I can do that??? do they make such a scope mount.... I would also like to put a really nice bipod on her as well, and ideas on what would fit perfectly on the rails? the last two things i want to put on the gun is a mag pouch on the stock by the but and a sling, does anyone know a good company that would sell these products. Like i said I have a thousand to spend and I would love to save a few bucks for ammo, but I could always find another buck or two to spend if need be.... I am an instant gratification person, so if I could get these things and have them when the rifle comes in I would love that. Thank you all for reading, hope some of you have already had to answer some of the questions for your own rifles but I would love to hear what you came up with..

Thank you

Standard Ideas

Okay since no ones on at this time of day, and its been kinda slow on here all day today.

So I was thinking about my new Standard M1A I recently got and thought I would put the modification ideas on here.

-USGI Flash suppressor-Already done(might have it reamed to NM spec)
-Sadlak NM spring guide-will get one eventually
-NM Leather 1907 Sling
-USGI or equivalent cleaning kit for the stock(for the weight and as a last resort it'll be there)
-USGI M14 or PB extractor(might even look into one of the extra Garand extractors I have)
-NM Rear sight (will explain below)
-Cheek pad-the one that used to reside on my PBR
-Camo

All SA Inc receivers, starting in the early 2000's, have this modification. Its called the Air Force mod, since they came up with it in the 70's to match condition their Garands. The rear sight "ear" for the windage knob has a hole drilled in it at its base (roll your receiver over on its side and look at the area under the knob, doesnt matter the model, standard, loaded, NM. The latter two have a spring loaded pin under the knob that cuts the windage adjustments of thhe standard knob in half, the standard will have the hole but no spring or pin) for a spring loaded pin, its actually an extractor spring and plunger. The spring is shortened to fit the hole and the plunger clicks into the modified windage knob. Its simple and it works using modified standard parts.

Since I guess all M1A's come with the NM front sight, I figured why not add them to my standard? I'll add an un-hooded NM apeture from my stash, and put the modded windage knob and plunger assembly on my rifle and have the more-or-less fine adjustments of a NM rear on my standard rifle.

Okay there you go. Lemme know what you think

Ammo shortage??

Is it just me or is there a shortage of inexpensive 7.62x51 ammunition in todays world? I'm new to high powered rifles and am wondering if this is a seasonal thing as more people are off to the range with improving weather? Is there a government conspiracy to dry up the supply of cheap ammo? Is the military buying more of the stuff and creating a shortage in the civilian market? Am I just not looking in the right places?

I check the links on RIFLE-COMPANY.COM every week or so and even the links that say they have the inexpensive ammo, generally don't.

Would like to hear other's thoughts on this. Thanks.

Going to have to wait till later tonight maybe when I have time to post some pictures, but I briefly tried my newest addtion out. It does okay, not exactly what I'd hoped it would do for me, but it does take some recoil out of it. Not so much noticeable with 150gr loads, but 175gr I noticed the rifle was better. Hard to say if accuracy is better or worse with it. I had 10min of range time, which included, running down range100yds putting up the target, running back, photograping the rifle and brake, shooting 10 shots of each, running back down range, photgraphing the groups, and packing up after I ran back. So nothing stellar, but my goal was mainly to shoot and see how much recoil might be reduced, not for groups. The range was busy, something like 3k-3.5k people passing the register kind of busy today! No time for anything. I'm tired and I'm hungry. It's time I work on them two things. Pictures will follow.

I was just finally able to locate a Scout Squad after a year of searching, and am day one into the 10 day grace period, so I figured I would find some fellow owners to hear what some of you have done to personalize your weapon. When i first bought my M4 Benelli, I found a forum where the guys all knew their Sh*t and was able to find out some really good swap mod's to slap on it, and am searching for similar knowledge for my M1, so any input is respectfully asked and appreciated.

Specifically I was wondering what sort of "options" I would have to improving different functions of the weapon. I am definitely not trying to make this "Tacticool" or I would have gotten the Socom, but its always nice to know the options. Right now, the only thing I am really interested in is a really great sling, and possible Scope(s) once I break myself in with the Iron Sights. I was also wondering if there are any trigger housing options/upgrades, or even Sight (Tritium?) suggestions. How hard is it to swap out Stocks, etc?
I apologize for posting here first before scouring the rest of the forum....which is where I am off too next. I am looking forward to getting to know this weapon.

It seems that a lot on new members have questions about cleaning their rifle. I've read all the previous post on this subject and they have been very helpful. However, I am a visual learner, I recently purchased a video that was very helpful. The video was narated by Art Lupino, a competive shooter and gunsmith who builds and services competition M1A/M-14 rifles( at least he was doing this in 1992)

Since it was produced in 1992 some may feel it's "dated" but since I was orginally trained on the M-14 in 1963 it didn't seem that "dated" to me.

The video can be obtained from the following websitewww.GunVideo.com.

M1A Trigger work

I've done trigger work on just about every pistol and rifle I've owned, except for my M1A NM. I'm not one to go in and replace everything, but I do like to optimize what's there unless what's there is totally unusable.

My M1A breaks reasonably crisp at 6 pounds... not good enough, I want it CMP legal at ~4.6 lbs.

So to my issue. I need decent disassembly help, I can do the rest. If for some reason I can't get an acceptable
trigger with stock parts, what are my options?

Ammo issues (I hope!)

Just returned from the range and had nothing but problems with the ammo cycling. I literally had to load each round manually as it wouldn't feed from the magazine. I tried several mags to see if there was magazine problem but had the same results with every magazine. There were several outright jams and a few times where the round was extracted from the chamber but hung up in the bolt extractor.

I fired this same ammo 2 weeks ago without any problems. I cleaned the gas cylinder components afer going to the range last time so I don't think cleanliness is an issue. I didn't have any other ammo with me to see if there was a problem with the rifle.

The ammo was purchased from Samco Global and is advertised as being made in Portugal circa 1982-83.

Photo is attached and while you are looking at the photo, please note the approximate 1/8th to 3/16th's inch "scrape" just above the F on the cartridge. There is also a small scrape just above and touching the circle and cross. I get these on every round fired regardless of manufacturer. Is this an issue I need to be concerned about or is this more or less normal?

I'm not dissing the supplier here, like I said, 2 weeks ago this stuff shot fine.

Thanks in advance for any information.

USGI Fire control group (FCG)

Recently at a CMP match, my rifle started doubling. I had used the rifle for ~800 rounds before his started. A senior guy at the match took a look and the hammer had been seriously worked over by a PO and I had to replace the hammer. I bought a new one ($45 ouch) , installed it, no problems.

Now I had a thought, if I had TWO FCG's I could make one CMP legal at 4.5 lbs, the other lighter for target shooting. Good so far.

Problem: Try finding an intact FCG. Well after a L-O-N-G search, I found one on EBAY and bid stupid money on it and having more money than sense I won it. Stil no problem?

I don't know the nomenclature for the individual little cuts of the parts but the trigger part that latches on the back of the hammer to prevent full auto is a LOT wider for what appears to be a selector engagement mechanism. Question, are these parts contraband without the selector switch? If so I'll just cut off the appendage and be done with it.

Adding on parts (FYI)

I am a guitar player, shooter, as well as a motorcyclist and I have never added one part to anything that wasn't functional... ie: to dress it up.

This is a pain if I'm looking to buy something because once the "bling" is added most people throw or give away the original parts, or when they trade it in, give the old parts to a dealer who throws it in a bin to be sold piecemeal.

For me, I seem to see a product the way the designer did, and like its aesthetics for what they are, so if I find something I want, I'll DEDUCT from the asking price in order to put the item back the way it was if the original parts are not available.

A few years ago I found a motorcycle I wanted which had a LOT of BS on it that I didn't want. I made a really low offer because he did not have the original parts and the guy refused my offer. A week later he almost tearfully called me and told me I could have the bike for my offer price telling me that I "probably was screwing him and was going to keep the bike as it was"

It took me several months to get all of the stuff the bike was missing, but it was worth it.

Now, I'm NOT criticizing anyone who blings up stuff, BUT this is a bit of advice, NEVER separate the original parts from whatever you dress up, not EVERYONE sees what is "dressed up" the same way.

EBR Mod 1 build coming together

I decided that since I was on vacation and the range is closed, much to my consternation, that I would let you guys know about where my Loaded Standard EBR build is and some of things I’ve thought about as to its final configuration.
First let me list what I’ve already done to the base rifle itself.
I’ve changed out the bolt (Winchester), trigger group & operating rod ( Springfield Armory/CMP parts), a Fulton Armory NM flash suppressor, Sadlak NM spring guide and TiN coated gas piston. I replaced the original SA Inc. oversized Walnut stock with another SA Inc part, one of the old modified USGI composite stocks with the selector cuts filled in.
As you can see in the pictures, it has the Sadlak scope mount I used to have installed, I’ve since sold the mount and re-installed the charger guide.
As for the stock itself, it should be here by Saturday, I hope. I guess I got lucky to the Mod 1, though I would kill for Mod 0, even just the rear end, but I’ll make this one work. Mine has an M4 style collapsible stock on it, nut I’m trying to decide between a Magpul CTR or a Crane SOPMOD since I don’t have one of them. And from prior experience, I’ll try the Tango Down Battlegrip the chassis comes with, but I’ll most likely replace it with a MIAD from Magpul. It just lends itself to more consistent trigger finger placement.
So I got on the waiting list at US Tactical, 60 to 90 days minimum as of today. In a change of fortune, I found the SAGE part on the Firing Line forum for less than a new one and shipping was included in the price, so I snapped it up and it should be here next week sometime.
So now I’m looking at optics packages for the finished product. But since I can’t do anything but use iron sights until I decide this is just something to keep my mind busy.

Vented gas plug

I'm baaack.

I joined up here a month or so ago, just after I got my Springfield Scout Squad. Posted on a few threads, thought a lot about what I had read around here, and on the advice of another member I purchased a vented gas plug off Midway. This one:

http://www.midwayusa...teel-parkerized

I guess it's OK, haven't used it yet, I just screwed it in there after cleaning the rifle last weekend. Noticed something I had not counted on. It screws down in the gas cylinder a little bit farther than the stock plug. That worries me. I found a shim kit on Fulton Armory's web site and bought it so I can get the plug in there at just the right depth.

My question is, how do I decide which shim to use? The hole in the piston has to align with the hole in the cylinder but I'm not sure if I can eyeball it or if I should use a gauge of some sort.

What say ye riflemen?

I knew things would start getting weird as I began to tweak this beast, but I love the rifle and will continue to put some personalizations on it. Just wanna make sure they are the right ones

When I first got my M1A, it didn't shoot as badly as some of the ones I heard about. But it certainly could use some improvement. So far this is what I've done to it.
Replaced the op spring with a Tubbs spring.
Shimmed the gas cylinder.
Replaced the gas piston with a Sadlak TiN.
Complete a trigger job.
Everything I've done so far has made improvements in accuracy and performance. I'm very pleased thus far.
The next thing I want to do is get a steel bedding kit and skim bed the reciever. I would like a good tight fit, similar to what my Garand has.
Secondly, I want a oversize mag release. I'm not that fond of the twig SA has installed on it.

I told you guys a couple of months ago that I purchased a ProMag 20 rnd mag for my M1A. I promised a report when I used it. Here it is.
I bought the mag for a reasonable price, I do not remember how much it was though. Lol. I wouldn't spend much money for a curiosity satisfaction.
First off the mag is well constructed. I have heard both good and bad about these ProMag magazines. Most of it was good, this is why I wanted to try one.
The mag loaded smoothly. I unloaded and reloaded it several times before taking it to the range for the first time last weekend.
I loaded the mag 5 times to full capacity, for a total of 100 rounds fired. To my surprise, this magazine functioned flawlessly. I didn't have even the slightest hiccup.
For the price of CMI mags at 44mag.com, I won't be switching brands. But in a pinch and a ProMag is available and a CMI is not, I would recommend the Promag. Of course only time will tell as to how long of a life span this mag will have, but for sure in the short term, it's good to go.
This might give you guys options, if needed, for future mag options.

What do I really have? Is it more than meets the eye?

Howdy folks!

I just snagged a "used" M1a from a local shop. They told me of picking it up at an estate sale. From the looks of it, it was definitely fired, at least for proofing, however the complete absence of any visible wear marks, soot around the gas system, fully intact parkerizing in the Op rod channel, on all the bolt surfaces and the contact surfaces inside the receiver, suggest it may have been ONLY proof fired. It certainly hasn't been broken in.

Here's what I do know. Please school me on anything you might add. It's my first M1a and my experience is very limited with a Polytech M14.

It has a fiberglass stock with rubber recoil pad, originally a brown color, now painted black with a wrinkle finish. Based on stock wear far beyond that on the metal parts, I suspect it was a surplus stock that was repainted in it's former life, somewhat battered along the way. I wonder if it was supplied from Springfield Armory in this state, or if it joined the rifle after delivery. The stock appears to have been filled on the right side where the selector notch would have been. There is a small amount of glass bedding in the areas around the trigger group and the magazine well. The action fit is tight and the firing mechanism locks up very tightly when latched. Looking at the fit of the receiver before installing the firing mechanism, it's clear that the bedding was done when these two came together. I just have no clue if it was at the factory or after.

The hand guard is new, either plastic or fiberglass, but appears that it was painted at the same time as the stock in the same black wrinkle finish.

Sights appear to be standard M1A type with a typical winged front post and the non-hooded rear apeture.

The receiver is marked "US Rifle M1A - Springfield Armory" with a serial number of 086xxx. I found that serial number associated with a post-ban date of manufacture around Jan 1995. That is consistent with the lack of "7.62" caliber marking on the receiver as well as the absence of a bayonet lug on the flash suppressor.

The barrel is marked TRW and appears to be date coded to December 1963 or 1983. It's hard to make out. The number on the barrel is 7790190 with a BP. I don't believe the bore is chrome lined, but it is pristine and bright.

The bolt is a TRW marked 7790186 with a ZJ.

I presume the operting Rod is a TRW also, with a number of 7267064 and 66118.

The firing mechanism is marked with 7267030 SA with the hammer marked 646008-2 SA.

It seems I have a 17 year old rifle that spent it's whole life in a gun safe somewhere. I was surprised to find all these TRW parts after reading that most had dried up by the time this rifle would have been built in 1995.

So what exactly do I have here? I beat the cost of a new Loaded M1A by several hundred bucks, so I feel sure I did well, but would love to know more. Thanks!

Scope mounting frustrations...

So, let me start at the beginning.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away...

My wife bought me an M1A Loaded for our 10 year anniversary. For optics and rings, I purchased a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP and a set of Leupold Mark 4 super high rings. It took a couple of weeks before I was able to get to the range to sight this in, but once I did, I had major issues.

I started off at 50 yards to get on paper. However, I had to move the windage all the way to the right to get it centered on the target. I literally ran out of adjustments. At 50 yards. Yeah, I had a feeling something was wrong. So, I emailed Vortex and voiced my displeasure. After I hit "Send," I started about what might have gone wrong. Then I realized it might actually be my fault.

One of the features of the Viper PST is their CRS Zero Stop ability - you basically use shims once you have it zeroed so you have the ability to go back to zero if you make adjustments. Well, I remembered I removed the turret caps, and, like an idiot, I twisted the turrets. Without the caps on. When I replaced the turret caps, obviously it was now way out of whack. I know, I know...what an idiot. I then emailed Vortex back, apologized, and explained what I did and it was my fault. The customer service rep at Vortex told me to send the scope back so one of their riflescope techs could reset it back to factory specs. Will do, good sir! The turnaround time was literally 4 days. Awesome service.

I got the scope back and went back to the range to sight it in. Much better this time; however, something's still wrong. My first couple of shots were high and to the right. So, I made the necessary elevation and windage adjustments and got it shooting perfect in about 6 shots. Everything seemed awesome! However, I noticed the reticle was still "off to the right" in the scope a bit too much. I emailed Vortex again, explained the situation, and they ended up calling me this morning to troubleshoot. I explained to him what rings and gun this was going on, and when I did, he shouted "aha!" He said this issue is common with M1As that have the Vltor cluster rail. He said I need to align the dovetail/stripper clip guide at the rear of the rail, in front of the rear site.

So, my three questions are...

1. Does this make sense what he's saying?
2. How to align the dovetail?
3. Would I be better off taking it to a gunsmith?

Any help you guys can provide would be greatly appreciated.

As you can see, it doesn't seem to aligned perfectly and is offset to the right. Does that make any difference?

What Kind of Accuracy, Long Range?

So I just picked up my used(un-fired) M1A Scout yesterday from my local dealer. The gun had been brought in by a guy who needed the money. I was told that the previous owner never fired the gun, I can certainly believe that by the way this beautiful rifle looks. Walnut stock, 18" barrel, not so much as a scratch/blemish that I can find. I paid $1,400 +tax. I was actually looking for an Armalite AR-10 carbine but after looking at the M1A for a couple days I realized this was a must have.

My big question now is, with a good quality scope WHAT KIND OF ACCURACY can I expect?
Anyone with knowledge please respond
Should I get a scope?

Got My New SA M1A

Endured the Calif. wait period and now have my rifle. Have not shot it yet (too darn busy of late) and that brings up a minor question. It's chambered in .308 and I fired a friends M1A with that ammo which got me hooked in the first place...... I loved it ! But somewhere I read that Springfield Armory recommends using 7.62X51 NATO in the rifle instead of 'civilian' .308 Win. I'd just like some clarification on this as it sounds like a milder version of the 5.56 NATO versus .223 debate that rages on today. From what I've learned about that is it isn't so much the cartridge pressures as a difference in the chamber design and that a 5.56 fired in a civilian rifle setup for .223 can be problematic or dangerous. So shoot .308 and I'm good to go ? Thanks.

After many Years of Saving and Waiting I just joined the club and got my M1A. I was so excited to get it to the range a put some rounds out. Not soon after I noticed all my magazines had an Arc scratch on the right side. Disappointing to say the least.

If you look at the attached Pictures... you will notice the Receiver Alignment seems off. The issue is easy to see. Everything functions correctly except The magazine is getting worn to the bare Metal.

I know I can call Springfield and send it away for 30+ days for them to fix but I would like to examine all my choices. Anyone know if Springfield will pay all costs including shipping and any dealer fees?
I am hoping someone might have an easy solution or recommendation?

Practicality of "Extra" capacity magazines

I figured since every one of our rifles was pretty much useless without a way to feed it I would post this here.

I guess everybody's noticed the 25 and 50 round magazies for the M14 lately. And I like to get trigger happy on ocassion just like I'm everybody else does. But I got to thinking about the real practicality of them.

The standard magazine (for those of us in relatively free America) is the old standby 20 rounder. I know I havent ever had my rifle(s) monopod on the magazine when I was proned out with it. And from the looks of the 25 round magazine youre gonna monopod unless you have the arms of a praying mantis or a long bi-pod. And and the high bi-pod doesnt seem so great in practice. Not to mention the ever present weight addition to the rifle itself and to you if youre carrying more than one. (when I find a scale I'll do a weight of the gear post on this)

Now I'm just thinking out-loud on this so dont take my observations as Gospel.

Next we have the new 50 round and to lesser extent the 100 round BETA-C magazine. I've not laid hands on either for the 14 but had one for for the AR(BETA Mag). In the case of the AR the C mag added ALOT mass to the rifle. Even on a basic M4 style AR it turned the rifle into a static defense weapon. (in a SHTF situation I'm sure the weight wouldnt be as noticeable), Also it pretty much deadened the recoil of the rifle too, and by deadened I mean there was NO recoil and follow-up shots were just as simple as re-squeezing the trigger.

I wanted to try the C mag in an A2 on burst but never got the chance, just to see how the A2 would handle it.

I'm not trying to stear this post toward the dreaded "SHTF" scenario, but honestly, would you want to hump eight 25 rounders, plus 1 in the rifle, or 50 or 100 drum?

I'd be just as happy only returning fire if I had to, and making my shots count, than having a ton of ammo weight to high tail it with and just sprayin to make somebody duck.

Anyway , I hope I made some sense in this post. Its something to think about anyway.

Sprung for a New Springfield

I went to one of my local haunts this afternoon and did some looking around. To my surprise they had two M1A's behind the counter.
One in a synthetic stock sportin a Kali muzzle brake, the other wearing a nice walnut stock and a neutered flash surpressor. Both are standard models and both were priced at 1249.00.
So I kept looking, they had a put together Colt AR-15 Delta type rifle, the lower was a later model Colt with the standard take down pins nd the upper was an SP1 fixed carry handle with the BIG front take down hole.......so long story short it was all Colt but badly built over priced. And they had a basic black ACR. It was also expensive, used it was 1600 dollars. I looked at it and it could definetly be a fun rifle. Though I dont like the MAGPUL BUIS. It shouldered nicely and fit well, but too much coin and I have AR's.
Then I got to thinkin, and went back to the two M1A's. The Kali rifles bolt had a some noticeable slop in it when I dropped the magazine and pushed it forward and back while it was in battery, so that one was definetly OUT.
I decided on the walnut stocked one after giving it a good going over. I put a deposit and will hopefully have her home in the next week or two.

I think at the least I'll switch out the neutered flash suppressor with a spare GI one I have squirreled away and put a NM spring guide in it. At most I'll buy a USGI trigger group which isnt cheap anymore. But the flash suppressor will definetly be replaced.

Is this just a bad idea?????????

Well as luck would have it I will be a proud new owner of an M1A my grandfather has had for 20 years or so. He has probably put around 300ish rounds down the pipe himself and I would guess no more than a hundred from other people shooting it. He said next time I am up at his place visiting it will be mine. He is getting a little to old to handle the rifle. He hunts with his 270. It is a fantastic rifle and shoots great. It is well taken care of. Anywho this has got me thinking. I am going to leave his rifle completely like it is. All USGI (except receiver obviously) and nice wood stock. Now I am wondering what to do with my m1a in a vltor stock. Any advice from this crowd would be welcomed. I am thinking to either send it in for a new barrel (18.5) to make it handier and add the aimpoint like I was originally thinking, Keep the 22 inch barrel and add aimpoint or stronger optic for long range shooting, or sell it and fund other projects. Maybe pick up another rifle in 308/762. So many options........What to do

reload and release

Well I have done a lot of practice inserting a magazine in my m1a and removing and loading another one and releasing op rod. I wanted to tell you all the method I have come up with and see if other people have any other methods that they care to share that may help. You all know that I have Vltor stock and this method only works (for me) with a stock that has a pistol grip unless you have very long fingers.

When the magazine is empty, with my index finger, I extend it and can depress the mag release tab, which release the magazine. Then I take my left hand off the forearm and grab a new mag and knock the other one out (since it was released and is just kinda hanging there) and then rock the new one in. It works great because I can always keep my right hand on the grip and ready to engage the target. I never have to break my grip. Then to release the op rod I reach under the rifle and release the op rod. I know most reach over the rifle to release the op rod but I have found it easier to reach under and release especially since your hand is already under the rifle from inserting the magazine. Also, when you reach under your rifle your forearm is used to help keep the rifle up and on target.

I have screwed around with this a lot and this method, for me, shaves off valuable time in reloading my weapon. I never have to break my grip and my sights never leave the target. Mag changes and releasing the op rod can be damn near as quick as the AR system.

I may take a video and post it to give you a better idea of what I am talking about. I don't know. It depends on how much time I have.

Range Update 2: Stronger with the force but no Jedi yet!

Lots to share so I'll try to be brief. (Yeah right...)
Got the three main things recommeded by the awesome core group of contributors to this site - a Sadlak Nat Match Op Spring Guide (impressive), a Sadlak TiN plated Piston and some Gas Cylinder /Barrel Band shims. (My barrel band was so loose you could wiggle it.) Disassembled my M1a Standard for the first time and installed these parts. It was great experience just disassembling the M1a. The only major "bump" in the road was that the gas plug was insanely tight. With a gas cylinder/barrel stabilizing tool working opposite the gas plug wrench I still could not break the plug free and in fact was worried that I would strip the plug bolt. Ended up going to the hardware store and getting some PB Blaster liquid wrench and spraying that into the piston chamber (since I knew I would be cleaning out the chamber and replacing the piston anyway.) This worked really well and after letting it sit about one hour I was able to break the plug bolt loose and get into the gas chamber. By the way - after only about 300 rounds fired I was amazed at how dirty the plug and chamber were. I think I'll make sure I clean the chamber at least every 200 rounds if not more often. Now that the plug is freed up it is easy to add that to the routine cleaning regimen. I put some Permatex Anti-Seize on the gas plug threads when I reassembled but may have used a little too much, or been a little too gentle re-tightening it because it came a little ways loose when shooting today and I had to tighten it up again.
I did remove the muzzle brake instead of cutting the shims. I could not find SEI Castle Nut pliers, but on Amazon I found some heavy duty castle nut pliers (I was really hesitant to get the ones commonly available since those had gotten horrible reviews.) The heavy duty ones are excellent - they worked immediately and look like they will continue to do so. They are made by AR Specialties and on Amazon are ASIN #B0071P6D3A. They are $28.95 which is more than the $10.00 - $14.00 ones, but again they look like they will last a lot more than one use which is more than some reviewers were saying about the $14.00 ones!
I had gotten a bunch of Rem UMC 150Gr for a good price and got out today to try it out and see how the upgrades went. The short version is that the UMC shot "OK", I think my M1a liked the Federal better. (To give Remington credit there are M1a owners who get great results with it - mine just seemed to like the Federal better.) My grouping is better but still needs work. I defintely need to shoot some 168Gr Nat Match quality ammo as a means of comparison. I suspect that I will find that it shoots even better yet and that I will transition to that. I was grouping about 2" x 2" at 50 yards - not too bad but should be better. It took a few boxes to settle in - I remember one of you saying to be patient with a clean barrel and with new ammo because sometimes it takes a mag or two to settle in. Thanks for that - it helped me be patient and proved to be true. After a couple mags the UMC did settle in, but again I need to get some Nat Match as a final means of ruling out ammo as a potential factor.
Lessons Learned:
Do homework first but don't be afraid to dive in and disassemble and upgrade your weapon. It is was awesome fun and now I know my weapon much better. Total cost of those upgrades plus shipping was $98.93. And they did help. Likely the most effective upgrade was the gas shims and that cost only $14.99.
Be patient with a new ammo on the range - give it at least a couple mags to prove itself - especially with a freshly cleaned barrel.
Be patient looking for the right ammo - keep trying stuff.
Get heavy duty castle nut pliers so removing the muzzle brake or flash hider is no big deal. (Don't forget the set screw in front of the front sight!)
Be prepared for a battle the first time you remove your gas plug - but be careful!!! Don't strip that darn thing - use liquid wrench if you have to, just make sure you clean it out after. Then put a dab of grease (recommended in the manual) or something similar on the plug threads so you only have to fight that battle once.
I'll keep you all updated - may need to wait a paycheck before I get the 168Gr "good stuff". I wanted to post some pics of my front sight day-glo paint job but it looks like I took them as too large a file size, I'll need to reshoot them at a lower quality I guess.
AS ALWAYS THANKS TO YOU GUYS FOR THE INFO, ADVICE AND SUPPORT!!

While my M1A is apart

ok, my m1a is apart in its 3 main groups. It is a MA9229 LOADED, my only complaint is that the rear sight isn't hooded! I can get one for around $50, is it worth it, or hard to install? One site claims it needs to be fitted, true? Its never been fired and I hear that it should be cleaned and lubed before shot out of the box? I also plan to white letter it while its down, first off the white lettering with a china marker looks easy but how long will it last? I have plenty of model car paint that might last longer but would the testors paint thinner damage the finish on the rifle? I'm not doing it just for the looks but also to see the small markings on the knobs easier so don't bash me too hard for it The things for cleaning it initially would be what? Prep-All wax and grease remover or brake cleaner, too harsh? I have a package from Brownells on its way that contains Lubriplate 130-A, Dewey muzzle guide, shooters choice bore cleaner, gas cylinder shim set, sadlak operator spring guide, bolt roller greaser, and extreme weapons lube. Any complaints with anything on this list? I have seen videos on what to grease and what to oil but no one mentioned initial thorough cleaning. Any input is GREATLY APPRECIATED, and PLEASE note if the info is first hand experience or herd it through the grape vine kinda thing. THANKS to everyone!!!!!!!

Oh yeah, on the gas plug, do I put lubriplate on the threads or something just for ante-seize?

Handguard Replacement

First thing, I'm the new guy here and I'd like to thank everyone in advance for checking this post. Now, I have a slight problem with a new stock that might require removing my handguard. The rifle is a loaded M1A 9229 and i want to remove the handguard and make a cover that bolts to the stock instead, kinda like a free floating barrel (if you will). Will this work at all or am i barking up the wrong tree? I don't want to give the name of the stock as of now, I'm waiting on an email to see what they might do about this issue but this stock drops down at the end about .25 inch and puts a lot of pull on the barrel and that can not be good for the gas system or the accuracy. I cut enough material from the stock where the front ban is and I don't like the gap left between the guard and the stock. I'll try to get a photo soon, any help is appreciated..........THANKS!

I got my gas block shim kit, Badger Ordnance op rod spring guide, castle nut pliers, and the BAD-T3 gas cylinder lock wrench from Brownell's today. I came close to screwing up right out of the gate, by not doing a little investigating before beginning the install. I initially failed to realize that I needed to remove that tiny little set screw first before trying to turn the castle nut. I luckily stopped when it put up so much resistance that I realized I'd better go look at the Army techincal manual that came with the rifle. It showed me my error and I also did a little more lnternet reading about the shim job. I still haven't changed out the piston yet or tried out the changes I've made, but I will very soon. The endplate is good and tight now. It took .025" of shim to get it to time right.

Hey my buddy found a used scout at a pawn shop it looks good but it has a couple wear marks i wanted to ask about. First it has a little rubbing on the barrel from the oprod. I told him a little rubbing mark there is not a big deal. Mine has one as well. But there was a line on the receiver i wanted to ask about. I am pretty sure it is from the oprod (by handle) when it moves to the rear. Take a look and let me know what you think. It is a pretty good price and he wants to buy.

I am new to the M1A, just got my scout squad yesterday! I have the tools for the GS work but am curious where the shims go. Is it between the barrel band and barrel on the receiver side of the band? How can you tell if the GS is loose? Is it about how the gas cylinder lock tightens to the cylinder or is it something you can tell without disassembly, like a little play in the barrel band? M21guy said in another thread that most are loose right from the factory. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have sold my AR10 to a younger brother. He will pick it up in June. I sold it to acqure the cash to buy the M1A I want. As noted, I cannot buy it until the end of July. I am a teacher (NRA life member, WMSA Member, yep) and I can sell back unused sick leave (we take a beating on this but beats having nothing). Instead of paying us at the end of May, they hold onto the money for two more months (they earn the interest). We get that money on 28 July, hence the delay. My FFL's are saying if they order then, it might be the next year before I get anything because the "frenzy" has commenced and everything is out of stock. Yes, this has me spooked. I have asked one of my FFL's if he could order now contingent on me having the cash July 28. I am still waiting for an answer. It looks like my price would be around $1450 out the door for the Scout Squad model, Mossy Oak. I like it. Anyone else encountering this problem? (out of stock and don't ask when we'll have them either...)?

You know how this happens........ got a chance to fire a friend's Springfield M1A and decided I had to have one. I read up a lot on this subject but I am bit confused on the terminology used to describe the different versions of this rifle. It was designed by John Garand.. got it. The M1A is the civilian version of the M14. But what is the M1 carbine, M1 Garand ? It is my understanding that the Garand (carbine ?) is chambered in 30.06 ? Or is this not correct. I'd like to get this straight in my head so I know what I'm dealing with and reading about in the forums. Thank you

I am building another Rogue up and was checking out some sites for parts and ran across John Wolf's site here
http://www.shop.m-14...irearms_c18.htm I have one Rogue Stock left.

For you guys that want to build your own. It isn't that hard, especially if you start with a barreled action and bolt as linked above. I haven't dealt with John but I was looking...

You can start with a barreled/bolt action and do the rest yourself at quite a savings. Doesn't really take any special tools. His GI parts prices sure seem nice.

Wolfe has got a LRB barreled action w/LRB Bolt for $1250. Includes Barrel of your choice including our Wolfe Modified Medium weight stainless steel, chrome lined and fluted 18'5" barrels. Seems like a sweet price compared.

Barrelled action/bolt is on back order though... I hate back ordered.... LRB has just a receiver at $890 so it is a pretty good deal.

Went to LRBs site and they have a barreled action for $1495. Includes new Criterion U.S. manufactured NM quality barrel (not chrome lined), original USGI complete bolt, assembled and headspaced...

He has USGI Parts.. Gas Cylinders for only $65. Trigger group $224 Op Rod $225. Looks like a full weapon is running about $2000 in parts less the stock.

Plus a Rogue stock....Jeez... Wish I picked up some more Rogues on that Christmas sale at $999. Puts a full weapon at $3000. I have one more Rogue stock left. I am waiting to pick up a couple more of the new colored stocks. Guess I am going to call LRB, and see what is in stock there. I will let you know. Probaly use some Sadlak parts or see what I got laying around in the parts drawer.

Anyone out there had any dealings with Wolfe?

Is there any interest out there to follow a build, from barreled action to finish? or is this old hat to you guys here? I haven't ever photographed a full build, but it might be something fun. It makes it easier for beginners on a budget to buy a bit here and there.

So this older fella at the range was there today shooting his Fireball, and I've meant to actually check my M25 trigger group against his high end digital pull gauge. 5 tries at it and my trigger reads consistently 1lb .77oz on the head all 5 tries. God is it great to have a great trigger. I know I've got to be the only one with this trigger set that light, most people don't set it there. They just cannot shoot it. I just love it! It is the very best part of the rifle. I'd bend over backwards to have a few more these trigger groups lying around for future builds. Dale Rader is a god! Absolutely nothing comes close. /wp-content/forum-smileys/sf-cool.gif

Range Update

Sorry been silent for a bit - been very busy training on a new dispatch station along with everything else going on (it's sure different being on the other side of the radio now!) Finally got out on the range with my Standard M1A after adjusting front sight. This was only my second time out with the M1A. Great day - good weather and no-one else there. Used up all 100 rounds of Federal 147 Grain. (Will try out my Remington UMC next time out.) Took a couple 10-round magazines to get a 1.5 inch grouping at 25 yards, then moved up to 100yds. Not too terribly bad - best group about four inches (sorry no pics) though obviously have room for improvement. I shot the last ten rounds at 200yds and was actually really pleased to get all ten in a group within 12 inches. Again obviously nothing to brag about but what I feel is a great start - honestly I was afraid of what I would see when I approached the paper! I can barely see the darn paper from that range...(can you say "Joe needs Lasik surgery"?!?!)
Slayer thanks again for your input about cleaning methods - I got everything you recommended and am impressed with the Dewey cleaning rod and muzzle protector. The patches are perfect.
A couple questions for everyone...
- Should I bother taking the muzzle brake off when doing routine cleaning (such as just the bore)? If I do will I need to re-adjust front sight? It looks like probably not, but obviously it can't take much to get the sight off. Along those lines how much breakdown should I do for a "routine cleaning"?
- I noticed that after setting 100yds on the elevation knob it skips back one click when firing the first shot, then does not skip any more unless I change the range then it does it again just one click. I tightened the screw that holds the elevation knob but it still does the one click skip on just the first shot.
- Which castle nut pliers should I get - can I just get them at the hardware store? The reason I ask is that there were some pretty unhappy reviews on Brownell's of a couple pliers that failed on the first use.
Thanks in advance everyone - good to be back. I'll let you all know how the Remington UMC shoots.

Standard M1A Upgrade recommendations?

I was trying to read back on the site to get ideas on recommendations for upgrades for Standard M1A but the info is spread out through a lot of threads. I know there is a lot that could be done, but I guess I'm looking for good starter basic changes such as gas plug(?), piston - things that affect accuracy or consistency in particular. Sounds like I need to get some shims too, but need to look into exactly where those go.
Again I realize there is a lot of ground that could be covered here - but basically to reword - What are a few of the first improvements you would want to do for a Standard M1A? As always thanks in advance, and my regards to all of you. There are some great people on this site.

I recently purchased a SOCOM II and love it. I went right out and bought a couple boxes of Hornady Z MAX (168 grain) rounds. Everything is brand new but when I insert the magazine and the bolt goes home, it wont completely seat. I can see the casing in the gap and am having a hard time getting it to seat. Its done it with all three magazines and I havent tried another brand as of yet. Any suggestions?

FAL or Socom?

New poster here, so please bear with me. I have an Imbel on Imbel FAL that is a nice gun. It's not the most accurate thing in the safe, but with 12 magazines and a complete parts gun, it is my SHTF gun. I have a friend that wants to trade his Socom for my FAL. Both guns are in excellent condition.
The FAL breaks down into pieces that will fit in a pack, while the Socom seems to be better quality. My major concern about the trade is the drop in velocity from the Socoms shorter barrel. Has anyone here ran one over a chrono to get an idea of the velocity loss? What parts will I have to invest in to keep it running for a long time? Also, I have read reviews that say the Socom is a 300 yard gun. My FAL is not real good at 100 yards, but is great for laying down fire at 5-600 yards. Will I be able to mount a scope and reliably hit a man sized target at 500 yards? I did a little competitive shooting in the Army, so am no stranger to shooting at distance. I realize that asking this on this forum is akin to asking the Chevy dealer who makes the best truck, but if this trade was for a standard M1A, it would already be a done deal. We plan to go shoot them both next weekend, and that will tell the tale. Thanks for your time.

Range Report

I promised you guys that I'd report back in when I got a chance to fire my new M1A Loaded. Well I did get some trigger time two days ago and have been a little hesitant to post up anything. The conditions were perfect with no breezes. I cleaned the bore before firing the rifle and fired three rounds to get on paper - plus foul the bore...

I got my portable shooting table out of the garage and set it up and got my stuff arranged.

100 yards distance....

Here's the two different types of ammo I was using.

Here's my first five round grouping with the Hornadys. I put the first round in the upper portion of the hole on the left side, the second round went into the right hole, third round went back over to the first hole on the left, and the last two went through on the right. Weird, huh? I took my time, didn't pull, anticipate or flinch in any way, and had a SOLID rest. The second stage of the match trigger needs some cleaning up. There's not much creep, but it's a tad too heavy for my liking.

My second five rounds were even more disappointing. I took my time, allowing the barrel to cool between groups, so heat wouldn't be a factor.

I got a little worried and figured it was time to try some of the Hirtenbergers. The results weren't any better....

Overall, I'm kind of bummed. My expectations were for a group no bigger than 1-1/4". It looks like I've got to spend some more money to get this rifle to meet my expectations. I'm going to recheck my mount as I didn't have a torque driver to measure my mount installation. I did notice that I had to adjust the scope both left and down a long way to dial in my zero. I don't have much adjustment left in those directions as it stands now. The rifle's headspace tag reads 1.631" so that's on the tight side. When I cleaned the rifle initially, the patch came out dirty, as if the rifle had been fired several times before I bought it. If my mount checks out, I guess my next plan of action will be to replace the gas cylinder assembly with the unitized National Match version. Is this something I can do pretty easily with basic tools, or would I need to buy some special items to make the switch? I'm about tapped out in the spendable income dept. so I'm going to have to tackle as much of this upgrade as possible on my own. I'm going to need some info on doing the triggerwork as well. There's a gun show going on this coming weekend in a nearby city, so I might could pick up some of the necessary items there.

***Small Update, I started removing the Burris scope rings from the mount and noticed that the clamping nuts seemed very easy to loosen. I may be that I didn't tighten the nuts adequately enough to seat the cross bolts firmly enough. This might not have anything to do with the rifle afterall! I gotta retest.....***

I've picked up some tips here and there throughout the site but I would really appreciate a step by step and any tips on how to clean the M1A properly. Some example questions I've had - it sounds like you shouldn't soak the bore snake,so should I run a cleaning patch soaked with cleaning fluid through prior to running the bore snake? It sounds like I should wash the bore snake from tme to time...how often and how should I wash it? I have the Springfield cleaning kit but it sounds like the rod though softer than the bore may still cause wear...should I try to stick with bore snake only? Last but not least, what is the best size patch - it seems like sizes are either too small or too big. I want it to really scour, but obviously it still needs to fit down the barrel. I've been tearing larger patches - maybe that's the answer. I wish they made a round diposable cheap cloth plug to clean with instead of trying to mash patches in there. Thanks in advance everybody. (This is such an important skill - I wish there were seminars at sporting goods stores that would do a hands on for this. I think I clean my P226 a little differently every time!)

New here with a big question

Hello, I have an Armalite AR10. After I bought and fired the rifle, I didn't really care for way it recoils, size, and complicated take down for cleaning. In addition, it is fussy about ammo and will double feed. One of my younger brothers has offered to buy it. I have always like the M1A but it was too long for my taste and along came the Scout Squad which is just right. Okay, not to step on any toes, I was considering making the deal when I read several reports on the Springfield M1A in Gun Test Magazine. They said it left metal shavings in the chamber from an unknown cause and group size at 100 yards was 4". I was looking for a "battle" not target rifle but a four inch spread seemed a bit much. They recommended the Fulton Armory or Norinco instead but the cost difference is substantial. My bank account reommends the Springfield. So my question is, was that report/test representative or should I expect reliable function and acceptable accuracy? Thanks in advance. I am trying to decide between the Springfield and the PTR91.

New buyer. Loaded with questions.

I'm a new member here and a soon to be new owner of an M1A rifle but I've got a few questions. Actually I've got enough questions to fill a book at the moment but I will stick to the biggest few that I have for the moment and post more as they arise.

First off I'm a bit new to these type of rifles. I've shot a lot of rounds through them before but I've never disassembled one or worked on one and though I am familiar with their history and how they operate, I still consider my overall knowledge of these rifles to be down at novice level.

I've narowed my choices down to the Standard, Scout and Loaded models. The other options are very nice but either too expensive or too bulked up with rails in my opinion. Anyways, on to the questions...

Though I haven't been able to confirm it for myself, I've been told by the one of the workers and owner/manager at a gun store when looking at some of the different models that other than barrel length, the Scout and standard are basically the same and that they disassemble for cleaning and maintenance the same way but that I basically need a tool chest (torque wrenches, gunsmith's hammer, punches, screw drivers etc) to do the same disassembly to a Loaded or any model with a match barrel. Is that true or have I been told a bunch of BS? I take extra care of all my firearms so taking care of one won't be an issue. I'd just like to know if I need to go do some tool shopping if I decided to go with the Loaded.

My next question is about ammo. Is there any type or brand of .308 I should avoid or not use at all in this rifle? I've been told so much crap about ammo that I'm starting to get confused. Most of the "crap" I am talking about is about using .308 or military 7.62x51. I've been told to only use one or the other by some and that I'm fine with either or by others.

As far as cleaning and lubrication goes is there anything special that this rifle requires? Again this is another topic where I've been given different answers and suggestions, mostly about lubrication. A heavier type grease like mobil 1 is what has been reccomended to me the most, while others say oil or the tw-25b grease that I already have is perfectly fine.

My last question is about the Loaded model. This isn't really one of those "which one should I buy" type questions but rather me asking if the extra money is worth it for the type of shooting I plan on doing which is mostly just for fun and hunting. More so for fun since I usually only hunt once a year during season and just shoot a lot when I can.

Thanks for the time and any and all helpful insight. I am glad to be here and can't wait to own one of these rifles. Pics will go up as soon as I get home with mine.

National match cleaning

I have been told by the gun shop where i bought my national match, not to dis assemble the gun more than necessary for cleaning. They said that the rifle is pain stakenly assembled to make it n.m. quality, and disassembling for cleaning may affect the accuracy.
Has anyone else heard this, and what level of disassembly for cleaning is adequate?
Thanks, Andy

Magazines to avoid?

I won't have my M1A Scout Squad until the end of July but I thought I'd get a head start in learning what I could. The 20 round magazines on the Springfield site are pricey. I checked out CDNN and they have magazines signficantly cheaper. But I learned the hard way with a Ruger Mini-14 that after market mags are sometimes problematic and other times junk. I have two boxes of USA mags, those that work and those that don't. So I was wondering if you all could fill me in on the mags to avoid. Thanks in advance.

My Socom16

I picked up this Socom16 for a Scout rifle project, ala Col Cooper. I want to keep it bare bones, so I'll leave the stock, stock. From buiding 1911, I'm a stickler for polishing up all mating, moving parts and having all drop forged parts in my guns.

The first thing I did was polish up the trigger. I took some 600g wet and dry paper and wrapped it around a popsickle stick and layed the hammer hooks and the secondary sear on it flat and rubbed 'em 'til they shined. I also shined up the side of the hammer where it rubs aginst the housing and safety and those surfaces as well. I also noticed that the back of the hammer is forked and the the right leg rubs aginst the sear wall, so I shined up those surfaces. I applied a little grease( on the side of the hammer and the sear wall) and now have a nice smooth trigger pull, with no drag or snags and a nice clean break. I didn't mess with the primary sear, as I want a good solid hook-up there( it catches the hammer when, if you hold the trigger back after a shot- keeps it semi -auto). I replaced the spring with a Tubbs silicon alloy. Also, I put in the tool steel pins.

Then I replaced the mainspring guide rod and spring for the Sadlak NM and the Silicon alloy, via Tubbs. Then I polished up the runner where the Op rod slides on and bottom of the op rod. Then the runner where the bolt rides. I greased it all up and have a nice smooth, easy charging cycle. I'll be replacing the op rod, piston and cylinder for the drop forged ones from SEI.

I ordered 2- SS mags from CMI and found kydex carriers from SKD

http://www.skdtac.com/Ready-Ta.....dt.111.htm

The SS mags look good with the black stock, kinda like parade, but it's practical for me in this humid, swampy, sub tropical climate.

I was going to put a Safari Ching Sling on it, but don't want leather, so I went with a T.I.S. Quick cuff sling.

http://www.tacticalinterventio.....eltwo.html

I put a NCstar 4X32 long eye relief scope on it and am wating for the bore sight to show up from CTD, to sight it in. I'm from the bore sight school, since ammo is $2 a pop.

Highlighting rear sight markings

My eyes finally started showing my age and I wanted to be able to see my windage and elevation markings better on the rear sight, so I thought I'd paint them similar to what is described on this site for highlighting the SA emblem. I also painted the sighting side of my front blades and experimented with painting the rear peep sight. I say experimented because I learned that the best thing is to leave the rear peep black.

I started with a toothpick, then a needle to try to paint the windage lines on the back of the rear sight and the lines and numbers on the elevation knob. I found that particularly with the windage markings, they are too small and shallow to just free paint without lots of overrun. At first I thought I'd just scrape the excess by using a hobby knife tilted away from the direction of the scrape - this works very well in the plastic modelling world, but I realized (fortunately before trying it) that this would scratch the black coating of the weapon. The short version is that I found that needling the paint on, then gently wiping with a finger tip instead of tissue or cloth would leave most of the paint in the crack where you want it. Then I used a toothpick for tight spaces and a modeller's mini sponge ( a toothpick-like plastic stick with tiny sponge tip - about $2.00 a pack) dipped in thinner to get the excess paint off of the flat surfaces. Works pretty well - not quite factory clear but definitely better than before and worth the hassle.

For the front blade sights (I wanted them to really stand out against the horizon) I used model RC car enamel paint. The flourescent colors are fairly clear and won't show on black - so you need to lay down a layer of white, then your color on top of the white. Just use a toothpick with a dap on the tip. I did orangish red for the middle blade and yellow for the two curved outside blades. I really like it.

I like the sight set up on the M1A generally speaking, but I wanted something on the rear sight to be a more exact measure against where the front sight is, so I did some experimenting. First I painted the inside of the rear circle white because I wanted it less blurry and dark compared to the front sight. That did not work (blurry), so I tried a white circle surrounded by black inside and out, but this did not work either. (Still blurry.) I thought maybe I should just make a short white horizontal line where the tops of the longer outside front blades should line up, then I would have my exact reference point. But this did not work for the same reason that nothing else did - mainly that the rear sight is too close to your eye to be anything but what it is. It really can't be a sharp reference point.

Question before purchase - seeking advice.

Greetings,

I was hoping on asking what may be to some silly questions, but sillier still is remorse from not having asked them before the purchase. After much consideration I've decided to dump my primo M1 in favor of a M1a. This is the first year I've ever hunted with a semi auto and loved it. I shot off an AR10 platform which had a compensator on it - loved it. The question I have is; is there a difference between the flash suppressor on the standard, and the compensator on the CA standard model? Is the CA compensator and the compensator ( proprietary muzzle stabilizer) of the m1a scout squad the same animal? Is it actually a compensator or a modified flash suppressor in order to please the ATF or Kalifornians? This will be used more for hunting than anything else and having a muzzle break has spoiled me.

Yes, guys. Finally! I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. I was checking our dealer to see if he could order MikeM0331's left hand Remington 700 yet. Not yet. So I just hung out a few minutes, was casually looking at guns when the manager said what's up to another guy next to me. He replied, "Still looking for a new home for my Scout". I turned to him and said, "What's up?" with my hands in the air like wtf? I said" I've been looking for one for a year. Let me see it". So he went and got it. He wanted $1300. Very nice shape, only 300 or 400 rounds through it. He wanted to sell it to buy a "Loaded" M1A. We haggled on price for a few minutes and settled on $1100. Done. So, now the California 10 day waiting period. It's OK, I still have to get a 'bullet button', I'm going to put it in the Sage MOD 0. It's going to rock.

About to buy

Hey guys, heading to my gun dealer to order me a new M1a this Friday. I don't really care to have a fancy decked out version of the rifle. I was in the Army, deployed to Iraq and we had a m14 ( just one ). I really like the rifle, esp the standard one. With the wood stock, nothing fancy.

My question is, whats the difference between the versions. I want this rifle to target shoot ( at my own range, not competitively) and hog/javalina hunt. My blind is about 200 yards to the feeder, I hunt a open field, about 800 yards to the other side.

I just want the standard rifle, but If its not much of a price difference should I go ahead and buy the next best thing?

I'm a college student on the GI bill, so not much cash, have a little saved from Iraq still. ( gun dealer said 1,400 for std rifle)

Again, want to shoot at an average of 200 yards...but if I see something at 800 yards I want to hit that to. (currently shoot .300 win mag out of the blind to get that range, I know its not going to compare )

Thank you for the help

Zeroing

I am back. I wrote several articles@ my M1-A and the stock not sitting flush on my stock @ sent picture. Update: I sent it to Springfield. They replaced the walnut stock with new metal. They put a new extractor in the bolt. They adjusted my mount to be in spec with my M1-A reciever, according to Springfield, it was way off. They checked the operating rod guide band it was o.k. It shot well at the range yesterday and i think my problems are over. Nothing but high marks for Springfield Armory. They even sent the targets where they range tested it. However when i shot reloads with 44 grains of powder and 165 grain accubond it caught two spent rounds and one round didn't fire and one round went poop/ half charge and did not eject the spent round. Guess i will stay away from reloads.

What are the right primers and specs for reloads on my M1-A for the 165 grain Accubonds?

What factory round should i use of the following: Black Hills Gold Match 168 grain TSX or 150 or 168 grain Barnes TTSX which is made by Remington in Arkansas with Kleen-bore primers or Federal 165 or 150 grain TSX or Federal 165 grain Game King.

I had sent my rifle to Smith Enterprises in Arizona to fix the problem with it catching spent rounds. They machined a slither out of the front of their mount so as to recess it behind the breech. This was a Smith Enterprises mount based on the Brookfield Industries Design. You would think they would know how to install thier mount and match it to my reciever and recognize that the reciever was not flush on the mount like Springfield did. Duhhh. They never sent me a copy of the range cards like Springfield did, they just sent me an invoice for $150. Smith Enterprises gets an F- and S.A. gets an A+. Thanks.Byron

Scout Squad Questions from a potential buyer

Greetings fellow Citizens.

I am contemplating the purchase of a Springfield M1A Squad Scout. I have several newbie/ easily answered questions.

My purchase horizon is about nine months, so I am thinking November of 2012.

I like the trade off between the longer 22" barrel and the short 16" barrel. I think this will be a very nice compromise between accuracy and weight. i want this to be a "true" general purpose gun for fun plinking and the rifle hunting season in 2013.

I have never done any gun hunting only archery but I like the idea of having one quality "go to" rifle and I believe the M1A Squad Scout is a good choice.

Your criticisms of this idea are welcome.

Hello Everyone,

I am somewhat new to this site and a new M1A owner (9 days and counting until I can take custody of it). I purchased the Scout Squad with the black synthetic stock. I'm looking for some advice for a new owner on accessories people have found useful, optics, cleaning and care tips, and upgrades that would make my new rifle better than it already is.

Thanks!

Receivers

My buddy is having a m14 built for him. He has everything but the receiver. I told him I would gather some opinions for him since he doesn't poke around forums to often. He is looking 762, SAI, or Fulton. I don't know much about 762 receivers but I do know that most of the recent receivers produced by SAI have been really good quality (finally got it under control). Most stuff I read about recent production SAI receivers is very favorable. I have heard mixed about fulton but not sure if it is recent or old stuff. Any info on the 3 would be nice.

Bipods

I am kind of on the fence about getting a bipod. I do mostly, well, all target shooting. I was wondering if any of you guys out there use a bipod and what kind and how you like it. Is it worth it to spend the extra money on the Springfield one, or is a $50 knock-off ok? If you hate them, why?

I hope this is ok but I wanted to share this link with everyone so that you all could get an answer to this question if you have this issue. There are a couple methods of curing slight receiver heel to stock lock up problems. Here is what I learned. If this is a problem to do this I apologize in advance and feel free to remove it.
